Montessori Academy's vision is that each student
will become an independent, confident, motivated learner, and a responsible community member as a result of the dynamic partnership between
students, parents, and teachers.
This partnership within the exceptional Montessori environment, while developing these characteristics, enables each student to become a life-long learner.
We are thoroughly enjoying the class. This first month has been used to discuss the basic concepts of community and rules. We have talked about Respect and Responsibility. Perhaps you've noticed a difference at home!
Our eight first level students seem well prepared academically and socially. They are happy to be at school, ready for new information and willing to either co-operate or work independently. They are respectful and able to wait their turn, but comfortable asking questions. They have reviewed some of the Math materials that were presented in Primary and have already received presentations on some of the new materials. Addition is the main focus; however they are also being exposed to money, time, problem solving, fractions, place value and linear counting.
Our eight second level students are reviewing addition facts and moving on to multiplication facts. They have settled into the routines and are excited about being mentors for the first level students. Work time is remarkably productive and playtime is active and loud.
They all seem to have grown during the summer both in height and in maturity. Because the second level students already have such a broad exposure to the materials in our room, they are still in the review stage, returning to materials and realizing that they are more easily understood this time. Some jumped in right where they left off with the racks and tubes for division and they are now being encouraged to return to the other materials as well. Some have started with the easier materials building their confidence as they progress through again. We started the year with some graphs and will continue to explore the wide variety available. They are continuing to look at money, time, fractions, place value, word problems and geometry.
Each of the six third level students are team leaders for three or four younger students. They are mentors for the second and first level students. It is a challenge to guide without overwhelming and see a need even when the younger child is hesitant to ask for help. We are having discussions about their responsibilities and the thirds are growing in empathy. Some are very good teachers. The teams are paired off for small projects to build a small community within the larger group. It has been helpful in other years because, simply by spending time together, children see the best in one another. Still it can be easy to stay occupied with one's best friends and fail to notice anyone else. These students have full access to the materials. They are using the materials as they continue to review old concepts and explore some new ones. The fraction work gets very deliciously complicated on this level. Geometry is not a new study for them, but it's approached more systematically. Rest assured, the third level students are progressing nicely and being challenged!
Mrs. Quinn is handling the Scholastic book orders this year through the website. She is sending further information home in Friday folders. They are all due on the 21st (9/21). Here is the link:
1. NEVER EVER NO-MATTER-WHAT BACK UP while you are in our dismissal line. It might seem inconvenient to wait for the person in front to move on, but Montessori Academy has been dismissing children from eleven classrooms simultaneously for many years without accidents and we need to continue to get everyone in the car safely. Please do cooperate and be content to move slowly and gracefully through the line.
2. Our PIM meeting is tomorrow evening, Thursday from 4:45 - 5:30. Mrs. Quinn and I will use that time to show the materials we are sharing with your children.
3. Dress uniforms are needed for individual portraits on September 20.
4. Conferences are coming up on October 8th. We'll have a signup sheet at our meeting on Thursday. We're looking forward to sitting with you for a moment to hear your insights and deepen our understanding of your undoubtedly unique child.
Thank you for your cooperation,
