Dear Room 1 Families,

First of all, we would like to thank those who have met with us for conferences or who have upcoming conferences scheduled with us. We hope that you were able to have any questions answered that you might have had and have better insight into how your child is adapting to our classroom. Please know if you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We are thrilled at how well this group of children is doing; they all seem to care about each other and are developing mutual respect for one another. We love our role in your child’s life and are very thankful for our many supportive families.

It’s easy to see that Fall is definitely upon us; the children come in with jackets each morning, and the trees outside are becoming so beautiful with their golden hues. With this change in temperature, the children have been learning how to hang up jackets and sweaters: this can be a monumental task for some, but they are all trying so nicely. Please remember to have your child put away his/her belongings at home to reinforce concepts learned at school; these are the beginning steps to independence and order.

Also, we haven’t received a change of clothes from every child; make sure that you bring a change of clothes, including underwear and socks, in a plastic bag labeled with your child’s name.

This Friday morning, October 19th from 7:30-9:00 a.m., we are having our first Open House. This is the time for you to come in to see the work that your child has been doing. The e-news has been highlighting this morning, and we are happy to see it quickly approaching. We also have our rescheduled Fall Picnic that evening at Granny White from 5:30-7:30 (please bring two dishes to share) – we always love attending the picnic and visiting with everyone. Just a reminder, After Care closes at 4:30 that evening so that everyone can be free to attend the picnic.

In the classroom, the children are hard at work in all the areas. Practical Life reflects the Fall Season with many sorting, matching, and hand/utensil transfer activities. In Science we are taking a more in-depth look at Earth. They have learned about the crust of Earth and now are looking at the many different shapes of the crust, which are landforms. The parts of the volcano and the devastating effects that it can have seem to have piqued an interest in a lot of the children. They are also learning about the different types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic and doing experiments to see which can float and if some can grow crystals. Hopefully your child has been coming home excited about what they are learning.

In the next few weeks the children will start their first look at one of the seven continents, Europe. As a reminder, we invite any parents who have experienced living abroad to come and give a presentation to the class about that particular country. All of the children enjoy these kinds of activities, and it helps them to build an appreciation for cultural diversity.

Our Materials Fair is going on this week, and we are excited about the items we have selected for our MA families to purchase. Be sure to bring your child with you to the Administration Building from 7:00-9:00 and 2:30-5:30 on October 17th -18th to pick out something from Room 1’s table. This is an annual event and is a wonderful way for us to replace worn materials and to add materials to our classroom. Once the event has ended, each child will present the materials purchased by him to our classroom.

Remember: our Class Picture Day is this Wednesday, October 17th.
