February 2013

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week this has been!  The children have been getting very excited about Valentine’s Day coming up.  We have been reading Valentine’s books and explaining a little bit about the Valentine exchange which will occur on Thursday.  Just a reminder, their Valentines need to be unaddressed but signed with your child’s name (that makes it easy to distribute).  Thank you to everyone who signed up to bring something for the Valentine luncheon/party.  We definitely would not have had been able to have this special day without your help!

Hopefully, the cold weather is behind us – the children have enjoyed being able to have a little extra playtime in the grassy area behind our playground.  We often see them playing imaginative games with the nature that they discover.  It’s a nice change from the enclosed playground area.

Our classroom is definitely buzzing during work time.  The children have become comfortable working in all areas of the room.  They continue to receive lessons throughout the classroom working to master each one.  In science, dinosaurs were the focus for the first part of the month, and most recently they have been studying amphibians and reptiles – they are all popular topics, and the children have enjoyed being able to identify which animals are reptiles and which are amphibians.   In Geography, the children have finished up the study of North America. The maps of North America and The United States are still available to use. These maps are a great introduction to our continents. They also help with concentration, order, and developing the pincer grip for writing. They are also beneficial for ones who are reading to find and locate the different countries and states that go along with the map. We will dive in where the pigeons love to be and learn about Antarctica and the Polar Regions next.

Lastly, we would like to thank you. Many of you are thinking about your loved ones or people who you care about and hold deeply to your heart this month. Every day it is such a joy to work with your child. When we may have something going on personally, the children are always there for us to brighten our day. Sometimes we get small pictures drawn and even goodies that the children bring in.  They often say silly or funny jokes that bring a smile to our faces because they think it’s the funniest thing they have heard, and sometimes we look at each other with a smile and wonder what was so funny! Other times we have to hold in our laughter. And then there are those times that the sweetest and kindest act melts our hearts or brings tears to our eyes. We are so privileged to have the job we have. We dearly enjoy each of the children. We love all of them.   XOXO to all the kids!!!!

Just a reminder:  Monday, February 18th, is Parent-Teacher conference day and school is closed on this day.  Thank you to those with whom we have already met and we look forward to meeting with everyone else during these upcoming conferences.

Sincerely,

Andrea Johnson and Mellynne Dickason
