Dear Families of Room 11,
Our year is off to a great start! Our returning students have done a fabulous job of welcoming new students and helping them get acclimated. We are currently learning about each student as they take turns bringing in a bag of items that are important to them. This is a great way to learn about each other as well as gain experience in speaking in front of the group. Thank you to those who attended our Parent Information Meeting (PIM). We hope it was enlightening and that you learned something new about how a Montessori classroom functions. Hopefully it gave you an opportunity to meet some of the other parents and become better acquainted with the teachers. We know you enjoyed seeing the work of your child and reading his/her written note to you. Our students work from a work plan that guides them through the skills that are needed to achieve success. The work plan is an agenda or “check list” which draws from various areas of the curriculum. Items from the areas of math, language, and reading are given daily priority. Your signature verifies that you have seen and discussed the plan with your child. A comment area is provided for both teachers and parents on the plan. Signed work plans are due on Mondays with the blue folder, and reading logs are due every Thursday. Spelling homework will be coming home during the week of September 24. Mrs. Chwirut has been working with all three grades levels to establish routines and expectations for this work. If clarification is needed, please send an email to room11@montessoriacad.org. Homework consists of daily reading (reading log), spelling, and memorization of math facts (using flash cards, written numbers, etc.). These activities should be spread out over the span of a week. We believe that it is particularly helpful to schedule a time each day for doing homework. When parents make school a priority, children get the message. Children have a strong desire to learn and to do meaningful work. When provided with a pleasant atmosphere and materials that are inviting and challenging, the day goes quickly for a Montessori student. It is a joy to watch your children learn and to receive little notes in our teacher mailbox saying, “I love this school.” We presently have 19 students and look forward to adding students throughout the school year.
