Montessori Academy's vision is that each student

February 2013

Dear Room 11 Families,

We welcome Adora, Amira, and Nandu and their families to Room 11.  The girls have transitioned nicely and have become a positive addition to our community.  Our class now consists of 22 students: 8 first levels, 7 second levels, and 7 third levels.  We have a wonderful group of children and delight in learning with them every day.

Kung Hee Fat Choy!  2013 is the Year of the Snake.  Today we celebrated Chinese New Year with a presentation from Maggie and her family.  We learned about the importance of this holiday and about the Chinese culture.  It was a treat to honor this holiday with the Chen family.

Parent/Teacher conferences start this week and will continue through next week.  We have conferences scheduled after school and a full day on Monday, February 18th.  Reminder notices have been sent home.  Since our time is limited to 20 minutes, we encourage families to send us questions beforehand so that we can maximize our conference time.  We appreciate you taking the time to discuss your child’s progress with us.

Our class is looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day this Thursday.  It is an exciting time for all of us as we share homemade cards, light snacks, and end the day with fun activities.  Thank you in advance to the parent volunteers for helping us in the afternoon.

As we shared at the last PIM, we have been alternating our afternoon class time between science and cultural studies.  The first and second level students have studied the concept of light and will explore the concept of sound this week, while the third level students have experimented with chemistry.  All groups are gaining a better understanding of the scientific method through experiments.

Our focus in culture has been on the 50 states.  Each student chose at least two states to research and will present their findings as a part of our class assembly.  There will be two performances again this year: Thursday, February 28 at 1:45 pm (Dress Rehearsal) and again on Friday, March 1 at 1:30 pm in the FABA.  We hope you will join us for the cast party following the Friday performance.

Please keep in mind the following dates:

•    Friday, February 22 – End of 4th Grading Period; Sock Hop
•    Wednesday, March 6 – LE field trip
•    Saturday, March 9 – International Potluck

Thank you for all that you do!
Megan Chwirut
