Dear Parents,

The holidays are here!  We hope we have the chance to connect with each of you at the feast or at the skating rink.

Let me thank you in advance for your contribution of food for Wednesday's Thanksgiving gathering.

 Everything is going well in the classroom.  We had a class meeting Monday to review the rules.  Dr. Maria Montessori suggested that we teach rather than correct.  The school year started with ease since everyone seemed to understand the general flow within a self-directed environment and the third level students have continued to set a terrific example for the rest of the room.  Still I realized it was time to clarify my expectations regarding some of the routines and procedures such as walking in line, sitting in group choosing work and completing tasks.  When the room runs on it's own the teachers have more time to actually teach.  This year has been remarkably conducive to work.

The third level students have been practicing multiplication, some are doing problems with triple digit multipliers.  We will also study word problems with a multiplication theme.  The second level students reviewed addition with exchange and they are moving towards subtraction or multiplication according to their choice.  The first level students are doing addition with exchange.  There is no need for them to hurry on to other operations.  This is a terrific opportunity for them to review place value which for some reason is a difficult concept.  Some of them will be exploring multiplication next month.  The second and first level students will work with the bead chains again.

The students studied the Fundamental Needs of Man including the drying of fruit!  They are reviewing landforms while they look closely at Europe.  Now in preparation for Thanksgiving Room 12 is studying the voyage of Christopher Columbus and a half dozen other explorers.  Naturally once you start talking about 30 people on a small boat you think about the Fundamental Needs of Man again.

The children have taken the floor with a couple of the cutest possible presentations.  Our audience was most enthusiastic and asked appropriate questions.  A good time was had by all!
