Dear Room 2 Parents,

We would like to thank everyone for the wonderful, warm welcome we have received since joining the Montessori Academy family.  We have enjoyed getting to know each of your children along with their families these past few weeks.  The children have also enjoyed welcoming our new student, Eryn Albert, this past week.  We are all excited to welcome Eryn and her family to the MA community.

The children have all been hard at work these past four weeks.  We are off to a great start, and all of the children have hit the ground running this year.  It was so impressive to see how eagerly each of the children entered the classroom ready to work.  Each day has been greeted with enthusiasm for learning new lessons and practicing old ones.  Our new students have had a very smooth transition into their new classroom.  They have become comfortable with the daily routine of the class and are enjoying their work with many of the Montessori materials.

 One of the current favorites has been the new science lessons about the solar system.  Everyone has enjoyed spending time exploring our Solar System lessons, learning the names of each planet and their order from the sun.  Many of the children have also been working on learning the names of all the continents, and we have even had several children finish pin pushing, gluing, and labeling their own map.

In addition to these big lessons, the children have also continued to work hard in math and language, challenging themselves each week with new lessons, as well as, practice and extensions to previous lessons.   The current excitement in the classroom has been centered around the much anticipated “water lessons” in our Practical Life area.  The children have had the opportunity to explore sponging, pouring, basting, eye dropping, and color mixing. 

Thank you to the Pauls, Manevals, and Smiths for providing such wonderful snacks for us this month.  It has been wonderful to have such a great variety of food for the children to try.  Also, it has been wonderful to have everything already cut up each morning, as it has allowed the children to practice serving themselves.  The children have been working on only taking a small portion (we place a sign beside each snack item that shows how many of each item may be taken), and using a serving spoon and tongs to place their snack on a small plate.  They have also been practicing good table manners and conversation skills as they sit with a friend at the snack table. 

Also, thank you to Sawyer and his family for donating an ant farm to Room 2.  The children are all eagerly awaiting the addition of some new pet ants (contained tightly in their home, not free in the classroom), and we know it will provide an excellent opportunity to begin a study of ants, bugs, and insects.  It is hard to believe that we have only been in school for four weeks with all the exciting things happening in Room 2.  We can hardly wait to see what wonderful explorations the upcoming months will hold.
